Approach:
Design-build

This backsplit renovation in Oshawa focused on turning an underutilized lower level into a clean, functional space that actually gets used day-to-day.

The goal wasn’t just to “finish a basement”, it was to make the space feel intentional, connected, and built with purpose.

Before Picture

The Problem

Backsplit homes come with their own set of challenges.

Ceiling heights, layout transitions, and long wall runs can make the space feel disconnected or awkward if not planned properly. On top of that, older finishes and poor lighting tend to make these areas feel darker and smaller than they actually are.

This backsplit had all the typical challenges we see in older Durham homes:

  • Disconnected layout with narrow transitions

  • Limited natural light

  • Inefficient storage

  • Underutilized square footage

  • visual depth

  • No clear function for growing family needs

The space wasn’t just outdated — it wasn’t working.

THE DESIGN PHASE

Before construction started, we worked through a detailed design phase to define how the space should function. This included:

  • 3D renderings to visualize layout and finishes

  • Material selection and color strategy

  • Storage planning and millwork design

  • Lighting layout and ceiling planning

This reduces change orders and gives clients confidence early.

Construction Detailing & Millwork Planning

Custom elements were planned in detail before execution.

  • Millwork elevations defined exact dimensions

  • Panel layouts were pre-calculated for symmetry

  • Material specifications aligned with design intent

  • Site conditions verified before build

Material Selection

Every finish was selected to create a cohesive and durable space:

  • Custom color palette for accent walls

  • High-pressure laminate cabinetry

  • Luxury vinyl plank flooring

  • Matte black hardware details

The Solution

  • Phone consultation

    Feature Wall

custom 3D panel feature wall was added to break up the long flat surface and bring depth into the room.

It creates a focal point without overwhelming the space and helps define the main living/office area.

  • Contractor taking measurements for kitchen countertop

    Bathroom Upgrade

The bathroom was rebuilt with a clean walk-in shower, matte black fixtures, and a built-in niche for storage.

Durable materials and simple detailing keep it low maintenance while still looking sharp.

  • Blueprint of kitchen layout design

    Storage + Functionality

Built-in cabinetry and shelving were added to make the space practical without adding clutter.

Everything has a place, which makes a big difference in how the space gets used over time.

  • 3D rendering of kitchen layout

    Layout + Flow

The layout was kept open, allowing the space to function as a home office, secondary living area, or flex room.

Transitions between zones were kept clean so the space feels connected instead of segmented.

The Result

What was once an underused backsplit level is now a functional, modern space that fits naturally into the rest of the home.

It’s brighter, more organized, and built in a way that actually supports everyday use.
